As applied research in the field of 3D printing at home I’ve been looking for objects that could benefit from hyper-customization. I realized few things in a household are only used by one single person, but someone’s favorite coffee mug is often one of them – so I made one that only fits my own hand. To capture my grip I covered a cilinder with clay, squeezed it and then 3D scanned the result with my Structure Sensor. Not many 3D printed materials are food safe, but I came across a company (Kwambio) that has developed a specialized 3D printer using ceramics powder to build up their models, then glaze them through a more traditional process – and they produced the first prototype for me. ...

I created a clock for my girlfriend, centered around the place we met. And to make sure she wouldn’t forget our next anniversary I accentuated the numbers of the date we met as well 1-7-’11. If you want to make your own: 3D map made through https://touch-mapper.org/en/ Clock mechanism ordered through https://www.myxlshop.nl/j-s-quartz-uurwerk.html?sqr=uurwerk&, I’m sure there’s plenty varieties available...

I’m helping Stichting Cubiss Brabant to develop a game that allows low-literate people to build their social world with 2D/3D icons, at the start and end of their Taalhuis program. For the players it serves as a great conversation guide, and for the organization it is a welcome data tool to measure the impact of the program....

The Game Solutions Lab (located in Eindhoven) hired me to do the prototyping for a project in Sittard-Geleen, where the municipality wanted to strengthen district ownership among their citizens. We came up with a cultural probe in the shape of an app that would allow for one picture to be taken each day. When started it would prompt a challenge for the player (i.e. what’s the most adventurous place in Sittard-Geleen), giving them one hour to find a location and take their picture. Then the camera would switch to the back and a short video recording was made, explaining why the player chose this spot. Finally another prompt would pop up, asking the player to hand the camera over to someone else (i.e. someone half their age). I designed and 3D printed the camera casings for the tablets as well. Five of them are were distributed, and they’re still traveling around (Aug.2018) – uploading a new photo daily....

MyKOONN is a platform that connects hotels to local designers, together developing (exclusive and sustainable) 3D printed souvenirs – based on a basic bottle cap design. They’ve developed a software plugin for Fusion 360 that enables the designers to add text customization to any of their designs, which makes the souvenirs that are ordered truly one of a kind. Personally I’m connected to Novotel Eindhoven, for whom I designed ‘CityScape Eindhoven’, ‘Dolfi Surprise Egg’, and a simple city cap with the logo’s of Eindhoven and Novotel to be used as a giveaway for loyal customers. Try the customizer at MyKOONN.com....

Broed is a network organization in the city of Den Bosch, and they asked me to think about an object that they could use to explain their added value. The company logo is a yellow egg, which made sense to start with, but I realized that the concept of warmth / energy was even more relevant for them. I combined the egg shape with a color shift material, changing from green to yellow at around 30 degrees Celsius. The idea is to write down your goal (focus on the ‘why’, so the ‘how’ remains flexible), put it in the egg, and start brooding. It’s a nice shape to throw around and helps to stay focussed on the challenge within. Yet it’s hard to make the color change by just holding it. If you participate in events organized by Broed, like a workshop or pitch training, it will definitely start changing towards yellow – and once you’ve met your goal you can break the egg and show everyone what makes your idea so...
