For two months I worked as a Hybrid Teacher at TU/e’s department of Industrial Design, on the subject of Digital Manufacturing within the context of the elective ‘Design and Sensorial Form’ by Simone de Waart. Sensorial Forms represent the language of the designer, the media through which we communicate. Therefore, as with any language, it is crucial that designers understand how this communication takes place and learn and practice the vocabulary to communicate. Through a series of hands- on design exercises students were experiencing how giving form to an artefact is a continuous dialogue between what you sense through your eyes, ears or skin and what you make – driven by quality, craftsmanship and subtle details. Through the development of a digital twin the students explored different modalities of their designs and the corresponding scenarios around it virtually, which allowed them to easily explore alternative materials and apply different types of sensory interaction to their artefacts (e.g. movement and...

Students at ROC ter AA Helmond and Summa College Eindhoven get the chance to spend 100 of their course hours on the development of a social innovation project for a target group of their own choosing. I’ve been involved in this project through multiple roles; I facilitated Design Thinking Workshops and VR workshops, and I’m coaching two teams throughout their entire...

Together with Maarten van Dijk / Additive Center I’ve developed an in-company training for additive manufacturing beyond prototyping. In four (or five) 4-hour sessions every other week we immersed companies such as Goudsmit Magnetics, Department of Defence and WEMO into the world of industrial 3D printing. Starting off with a technological overview and inspiring real-world applications we would dive into a first brainstorm session, and in the following weeks we assisted in concept development for polymer and metal 3D printing applications through our proprietary ‘Additive Application Canvas’, in depth theoretical training, design guides and interactive feedback...

In 2019 I assisted SingularityU The Netherlands on average every other month, inspiring their clients (such as DLL, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Infrastructure) with the latest developments in additive manufacturing. The most memorable events have been their signature event offered twice a year: the SU Executive Program. A wide variety of C-level participants are immersed in exponential experiences for a total of 72 hours. In December I got the change to time travel through this event, by hosting a ‘Fire Challenge’ on the first evening – starting a fire using prehistoric tools – and guiding them into the future the second evening with 3D printing. Setup for the 3DEMO at Boshuys...

For the fifth year in a row I participated in the Capstone Project of the Hotel Management course at Breda University as the lecturer of ‘Design Thinking and Prototyping’. After the lecture I coach and judge all the groups on the development of their first rapid prototype, and bestow the team with the best failure a custom ‘lemon award’ – to communicate how important it is in a design process to take risks and make mistakes. The lemon part of the award can be screwed open to reveal a block of post-it notes, this represents a perfect example of the power of failure: an experiment in glue development made the substance semi-sticky. Someone made the very smart call to turn it into a product you can easily peel off, turning it into one of the most successful products ever...

The OneWorldCitizens foundation promotes social entrepreneurship among youths globally, and connected me to an ambitious young entrepreneur in Barathpur, Nepal called Pradeep Sapkota. Together we’re aiming to transform his current IT center into a technology hub, where he can inspire his community to engage in high-tech projects and agriculture innovation – keeping educated peers from going abroad. We settled on drone technology to get things started, since precision farming is a relatively low-cost, high return approach for agriculture innovation. For the pilot test we acquired a DJI Phantom 4, an easy to use, high quality camera drone. In cooperation with TGD (TU/e’s student association for Technology for Global Development) we organized a Hackathon that focused on getting the most our of this pilot, divided in 4 challenges: data analysis, business models, hardware upgrades and community intergration. All four groups discovered great additional value, but the feasibility prize went to ‘hardware upgrades’ and a team of students who just started the brand new learning line ‘Responsible Innovation in a Global Context’ took on the challenge to build an open source NDVI sensor, which can measure crop health, and can offer the farmers almost instant feedback on their lands’ primary needs – and thus reduce manual labor, one of the biggest issues for this sector in Nepal. I coached the students in their research and development, and since their final presentation they’ve transformed into a social enterprise – adding the software element and preparing the drone for deployment in the field....

Together with Frederik Theuwis I hosted an evening session for around 25 philosophy students and professionals at BANK15 in Tilburg, where we experimented with custom made VR environments to encourage in depth interaction among the participants. With some simple modifications of 360 degree photography we created an alternate dimension of the same space we were in that evening – paired up the players and gave them different challenges. Based on the interactions that took place, participant responses and everyone’s overall enthusiasm the event boosted our confidence that there’s a lot of potential in using VR for abstract research purposes. ...

I’m regularly invited by SingularityU The Netherlands to host the tech demo about digital manufacturing during their innovation programs. Using 3D printed samples of applications with an interesting story I’m simultaneously showcasing many different printable materials (like metal, full color, ceramics, silicone / rubber, wood, high temp, ultra detail, …). With a complementary visual presentation I bring another 50+ stories with me collected in themes like software, hardware, medical, military, fashion and promising experiments. Sometimes I start 3D scanning the participants, and last time even ended up combining their busts with game- or movie characters – edited on the spot and produced right after. ...

This year I’ve kept working with Cubiss on a regular basis – on different types of projects; The further development of the playful impact tool ‘Talas‘: Together with the team behind DURF! – an inspiring online magazine and offline platform for innovation in the library sector – I helped develop a new pay-off to explain their corporate identity: DURF: verzamel(t) de moed. “DARE: collect(ed) courage”. Leading a creative session with library leaders about strategic innovation proposals for 2019, applying the Lego Serious Play...

I regularly give 3DEMO’s at Singularity U’s Innovation Hub in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. In 2017 I also got a chance to present some inspiring stories / applications at their major event of the year: The SU Summit. Main themes were Innovative Materials (4D), Artificial Intelligence (Topology Optimization), Medical (Prosthetics), Architecture, Automotive, Fashion, Food, Music and...
